Takamori Yusui Tunnel Park, located in Takamori town, Kumamoto prefecture, is a unique park built within a partially completed railway tunnel. Construction began in 1973 as part of the planned Takamori Tunnel (6480m long) to connect the old national railway Takamori and Takachiho lines. However, repeated flooding incidents starting in 1975 ultimately halted the project after 2055m had been excavated. A portion of the remaining tunnel and the surrounding area were developed, opening to the public in 1994. The tunnel, with its constant 17°C (63°F) temperature year-round, has become a popular summer retreat. The park features attractions such as the "Water Pearl" fountain and the "Yusui-kan" (Spring Water Museum), offering something for visitors of all ages. Today, the site serves as the town’s water source, providing 32 tons of water per minute for drinking and agricultural use. The park also boasts walking paths, rest areas, and parking, making it a great destination for families, couples, and friends alike. Takamori Yusui Tunnel Park offers a fascinating blend of nature and history.
