While some navigation apps may suggest the northern mountain foot (Kawauchi settlement) route, access from the southern (ocean-side) Tanazoko settlement is more common. Regardless of the route, be prepared for a narrow, winding mountain road with limited passing opportunities near the summit. Drive cautiously.
Located on the summit of Mount Kuratake, the highest peak in the Amakusa Islands, Kuratake Shrine has been revered by the people of Amakusa as a sacred mountain since ancient times. It was built to pray for the safety of fishermen.
The view from the summit is exceptional, overlooking the calm waters of Yatsushiro Sea and Ariake Sea, as well as the islands of Gosho-ura. You can truly feel the magnificence of Amakusa's nature.
While you can access the summit by car, the road is narrow and requires careful driving.
There's a small parking area near the shrine, but if it's full, you may need to park a short distance away and walk.
Kuratake Shrine is a highly recommended spot to experience the beauty of Amakusa's nature. It's perfect for those seeking a tranquil space to unwind and those wishing to admire the stunning views of Amakusa.
