Kawago no Ookusu Park, located in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, is home to Kawago no Ookusu, a giant camphor tree designated as a National Natural Monument. This magnificent tree, said to be over 3000 years old, stands 25 meters tall, boasts a trunk circumference of 33 meters, and spreads its branches 27 meters east-west and north-south. Its overwhelming presence captivates all who visit. The trunk is covered in various plants, including boulan (a type of orchid), nokisinob (a type of fern), and moss, adding to its majestic appearance and conveying a profound sense of history.
Near the giant camphor tree is a watermill museum where you can learn about the mechanics and history of watermills. The museum also offers tastings and sales of watermill-ground rice, a unique product embodying the power of the tree's rich natural environment.
There's also Tametomo-kan, a theater showcasing a karakuri ningyo (mechanical puppet) show based on the local legend of a giant serpent. This entertaining performance appeals to both children and adults.
Kawago no Ookusu Park attracts many visitors seeking a place where they can connect with nature and history. Come experience the power of this ancient tree and enjoy a relaxing time.
