Choukokan Museum is a museum showcasing historical materials and art and craft items passed down through the Nabeshima clan, the former feudal lords of Saga. Established in 1922 (Showa 2), it's Saga Prefecture's first museum and is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The museum houses numerous invaluable materials that illuminate the history and culture of the Saga clan, offering a glimpse into the lives and culture of that time.
For example, you'll be awestruck by the exquisite craftsmanship and beauty of "Nabeshima-yaki" (Nabeshima porcelain) and "Nabeshima-dantsu" (Nabeshima tapestry), prized art and craft items of the Saga clan. Ancient documents and maps also tell the story of the Saga clan, providing insights into their politics, economy, and culture.
Choukokan also holds several exhibitions and lectures throughout the year. These events offer a deeper understanding of the Saga clan's history and culture.
Choukokan is a must-see museum for anyone interested in the history and culture of the Saga clan. Be sure to visit when you're in Saga.
