Known as the "Sunset Futamigaura," this location features iconic Meotoiwa (Husband and Wife Rocks) bound by a giant sacred straw rope, offering stunning sunset views.
Sakurai Futamigaura is a beautiful coastal area in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, famous for its gorgeous sunsets. Approximately 150m offshore, the Meotoiwa (Husband and Wife Rocks) stand tall—the male rock at 11.8m and the female rock at 11.2m—connected by a massive 30m long, 1-ton sacred straw rope (shimenawa). This sacred site has long been revered and serves as the shintai (sacred object) of Sakurai Shrine. The Meotoiwa represent Izanagi-no-mikoto (male deity) on the right and Izanami-no-mikoto (female deity) on the left, their close proximity amidst the turbulent waves symbolizing marital harmony and blessings for happy marriages. A distinctive white torii gate stands in front of the rocks, appearing only during low tide. Every year, from late April to early May, during the spring high tide, the "Meotoiwa Dai-shimenawa-kakegae Matsuri" (Husband and Wife Rocks Great Sacred Rope Replacement Festival) takes place. This vibrant festival, praying for bountiful harvests and good health, showcases the impressive sight of villagers carrying the massive shimenawa into the sea. The sunset viewed between the Meotoiwa around the summer solstice is particularly breathtaking and beloved. Sakurai Futamigaura isn't just about sunsets; it's also a popular spot for leisurely strolls, enjoying the sea breeze. Numerous restaurants and cafes are nearby, offering dining and rest options.
