Overview

Mount Sanbe is an active volcano located in central Shimane Prefecture, standing at 1,126 meters above sea level. The caldera, formed approximately 4,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption, is breathtaking in its grandeur. Within the caldera, you'll find a chain of peaks, including O-Sanbeyama, Me-Sanbeyama, Ko-Sanbeyama, and Mago-Sanbeyama, each with its unique character. A vast grassland stretches at the foot of the mountain, ablaze with irises in spring and adorned with stunning autumn foliage. This grassland has been maintained through the traditional practice of controlled burning, offering a glimpse into local culture. Mount Sanbe boasts a network of hiking trails catering to all skill levels, from beginner-friendly gentle slopes to challenging routes for experienced climbers. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view encompassing the Sea of Japan, the Chugoku Mountains, and even Mount Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. Furthermore, Mount Sanbe offers various amenities, including Sanbe Onsen (hot springs) and campsites. The hot springs are perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking or climbing, with day-trip options available. The campsites provide a tranquil setting surrounded by nature, ideal for stargazing under the clear night sky.
