Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, located in Ota City, Shimane Prefecture, was once Japan's largest silver mine. Its history dates back to the 16th century, and during the Edo period, it played a crucial role in supporting Japan's economy as a shogunate-controlled mine. Iwami Ginzan was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 and continues to attract numerous visitors.
Ryūgenji Mabu is one of the most significant mine shafts in Iwami Ginzan, developed in the mid-Edo period. The interior remains largely untouched, allowing visitors to vividly imagine the mining operations of that era. In some areas, you can even see the handprints of the miners, a testament to the arduous work they performed. The shaft also features exhibits that shed light on the lives of the miners, including their clothing, tools, and mining techniques.
Ryūgenji Mabu offers a unique opportunity to delve into the World Heritage history of Iwami Ginzan and experience the harsh realities faced by the miners. Be sure to visit Ryūgenji Mabu during your trip to Iwami Ginzan.
