Sandanbeki Cliffs, located in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, are a nationally designated place of scenic beauty, renowned for their magnificent cliffs approximately 50 meters high and extending for about 2 kilometers. They are designated as a place of scenic beauty along with Engetsujima Island (Takashima), Senjojiki, and Sandanbeki Cliffs.
Sandanbeki are towering columnar jointed rock walls that stand directly on the sea, located on the western coast of the Kii Peninsula's southern area, within the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, and 1.8 km south of the "Saki-no-yu" hot spring in Nanki Shirahama Onsen.
An observation deck offers stunning views of the expansive Nanki coastline. A sea cave, 36 meters underground, has also been formed. An elevator takes visitors down from the cliff top for cave exploration.
Legend has it that this sea cave was used to hide boats by the Kumano Suigun, adding a touch of historical intrigue. The name "Sandanbeki" (Three-Tiered Cliffs) is said to derive from a 'Midan,' a lookout point used to spot fish schools (or whales, according to another theory).
In recent years, it's gained fame as a lover's sanctuary, with many couples attaching love locks to the heart-shaped monument next to the observation deck.
There's also a monument known as the "Lipstick Monument," embodying a wish for unrequited love to come true. There are rumors that touching it with your lover ensures lasting happiness, or that touching it together with your crush will lead to mutual affection. The cliffs are a popular date spot, with couples enjoying the views, taking wedding photos, etc. In April 2016, Sandanbeki Cliffs were officially certified as a romantic spot perfect for proposals.
Sandanbeki Cliffs are a highly recommended sightseeing spot, offering a powerful sense of nature's grandeur and romance. Experience their breathtaking scenery and historical charm for yourself!
