A museum where tradition and innovation blend seamlessly. Immerse yourself in art from Japan and around the world for an inspiring experience.
The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum is a historic museum that opened in 1933 (Showa 8). Originally known as the "Tairei Kinen Kyoto Bijutsukan" (Kyoto Museum Commemorating the Imperial Enthronement), it was built thanks to donations from the Kansai business community, the art world, and citizens. Designed by architect Kenjiro Maeda, its distinctive feature is its two-story reinforced concrete structure in the Imperial Crown style. Reopening in spring 2020 after a major renovation, it was reborn as a new museum that seamlessly integrates modern design while preserving its historic building to the fullest extent. It now features various spaces, including the Higashiyama Cube, a new building catering to contemporary art; the Collection Room, showcasing masterpieces of the Kyoto art scene; and The Triangle, supporting emerging artists. The museum houses a wide range of artistic works, from domestic and international contemporary art to Japanese and Western paintings and sculptures, offering visitors opportunities to engage with diverse eras and cultures through its special and permanent exhibitions. The museum also boasts rich learning programs centered on collaborative learning, as well as inviting public spaces such as the KYOCERA Square and rooftop terrace, which serve as relaxing areas and event venues. A lush green garden is also located within the museum grounds, providing a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Furthermore, a cafe and museum shop are available for visitors to take a break between art appreciation or pick up souvenirs. The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum is a museum that anyone can enjoy, not just art enthusiasts. We encourage you to visit and experience the fusion of tradition and innovation in its architecture and diverse art collections.
