Dogashima offers breathtaking scenery shaped by unique rock formations and caves. The "Tenmado Cave," a national natural monument, is an absolute must-see.
Dogashima is a scenic spot in Nishiizu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, blessed with magnificent natural beauty. The distinctive landscape was created by subaqueous debris flows formed during volcanic eruptions when the Izu Peninsula was an active submarine volcano. These flows, overlaid by layers of pumice and volcanic ash, were eroded by waves to form the dramatic cliffs that characterize Dogashima. The most famous attraction is "Tenmado Cave," a national natural monument. This sea cave’s ceiling collapsed, creating a breathtaking hole that you can look down into from above. You can also explore the cave from the sea by boat. A walkway surrounds Tenmado Cave, offering stunning views of the vast Pacific Ocean as you gaze down into the cave. Besides Tenmado Cave, Dogashima also features "Sanshirojima," a group of islands named after "Izu no Sanshiro," a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Sanshirojima comprises four islands: Zōjima, Nakanoshima, Okinosejima, and Takashima, located about 200 meters off the coast of the Izu Peninsula in Suruga Bay. At low tide, a sandbar (tidal island) about 30 meters wide appears, connecting Zōjima, the closest island to the Izu Peninsula. During exceptionally low spring tides, you can even walk across this sandbar, a unique Dogashima experience. Locals call this sandbar "Sehama." Dogashima offers more than just stunning views. It boasts various tourist facilities, including boat tours and the Koyama Yūzō Museum. The "Blue Cave Cruise" is a popular boat tour offering breathtaking views of Tenmado Cave and the surrounding unique rock formations from the sea. The Koyama Yūzō Museum showcases the memories and precious materials from the youth of the singer and actor, Koyama Yūzō. Dogashima Onsen, an area with many hotels, also offers day trip onsen experiences. Dogashima is a captivating tourist destination where nature, history, and culture harmoniously blend. Visit Dogashima and immerse yourself in its majestic nature, rich history, and vibrant culture.
