The former residence and garden of Iwasaki Hisaya, eldest son of Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu. The Western-style building is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, representing a prime example of modern Japanese Western-style wooden architecture.
Overview
The Former Iwasaki Residence Garden was the estate of the Iwasaki family, the owners of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, during the Meiji period. The Western-style mansion, built by Iwasaki Hisaya, the eldest son of the founder Iwasaki Yataro, as a guesthouse, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, representing a leading example of modern Japanese Western-style wooden architecture. It was designed by Josiah Conder, a British architect also known for designing the Kaikan building. The mansion boasts a magnificent Jacobean style and offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the time. The adjoining traditional Japanese-style building (washinkan) is also a must-see, featuring preserved wall paintings said to have been designed by Hashimoto Gaho, a prominent Japanese painter of the Meiji era. The garden connects the Western and Japanese-style buildings, creating a harmonious blend of Western and Eastern aesthetics. The expansive garden, partly based on the style of large daimyo (feudal lord) gardens, was redesigned with a vast lawn created by filling in a pond, incorporating garden stones, lanterns, and artificial hills. The Former Iwasaki Residence Garden is a valuable site where one can experience history and culture. Immerse yourself in the opulent lifestyle of the past and the fusion of Western and Japanese cultures.
