A breathtaking spot offering a magnificent panorama of the Pacific Ocean. The stone observatory, steeped in history, once served as a military installation.
Located at the northern tip of the Shigeza Coast, Ashigezaki Observatory is renowned for its stunning panoramic views of the vast Pacific Ocean. The observatory was once a military facility used by the Imperial Japanese Army. During the latter stages of the Pacific War, it was utilized for monitoring and reconnaissance of enemy vessels. Today, its stone structure stands as a testament to its historical past. From the observatory, you can see as far north as the Shimokita Peninsula and as far south as Hachinohe city. On a clear day, you might even spot distant islands. The area surrounding the observatory is also home to a variety of seasonal flowers, including beach roses, making it a lovely place for a stroll. Spring brings *michinoku fukujusou* and *azuma-giku*; summer, beach roses (*hamanas*) and *sukashiyuri*; and autumn, *hamagiku*. Beach roses, in particular, are a symbolic flower of the Shigeza Coast and grace the walkways around the observatory. A walkway extends from the observatory, following the coastline for approximately 2 kilometers. Along this path, you'll encounter a diverse landscape of rocky outcrops, sandy beaches, and pine forests, ensuring a captivating experience. The observatory area also provides convenient amenities such as parking, a souvenir shop, and restrooms.
