Overview

Tsurigane-dou, located on the Kosode Coast in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture, is a magnificent work of art created by nature and part of the Sanriku Fukkoku National Park. Although the bell-shaped rock that once hung from the cave ceiling was lost in the Meiji Sanriku earthquake tsunami, the remaining cavity continues to captivate people with its mystical presence, both past and present. Tsurigane-dou's name originates from the bell-shaped rock that once hung from its ceiling. This rock was destroyed by the Meiji Sanriku earthquake tsunami and no longer exists, yet its legend lives on. Tsurigane-dou is a quiet and mystical place nestled in a magnificent natural setting. Particularly during the summer solstice in June, the rising sun paints the inside of the cave red, creating a breathtaking and mystical spectacle. This fantastic sight speaks to the long history and powerful forces of nature that shaped Tsurigane-dou. The surrounding area of Tsurigane-dou features the beautiful Kosode Coastline, offering plenty to see, including unusual rock formations and sheer cliffs. Kosode Coast is also known as the northernmost limit of Ama (female divers), where abalone and sea urchin fishing by Ama was once thriving. The tradition of Ama continues to this day, and you can even see demonstrations of their free-diving fishing techniques in the summer. When visiting Tsurigane-dou, be sure to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Kosode Coast.

INFO
While you can park one car in front of the Tsurigane-do cave sign, it's much better to park in the designated parking lot for a better view. The road in front of the sign is a tunnel with poor visibility, so parking there is not recommended. You can stand at the base of the Tsurigane-do cave, and your shoes won't get wet if the tide is out. While not particularly difficult, it's more suitable for those somewhat accustomed to rocky terrain. Sneakers are perfectly fine. Avoid sandals or any footwear that's easily removed.
