Senjyōjiki Coast is a coastal area located in Fukaura-machi, Aomori Prefecture, within the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park.
Legend says it was uplifted by an earthquake in 1792, and that a Tsugaru clan lord held a grand banquet there, laying down a thousand tatami mats.
This legend is the origin of the name "Senjyōjiki" (thousand tatami mats), as the expansive rock surface resembles a vast expanse of tatami mats.
The coastline is dotted with unique rock formations known as green tuff, associated with black ore veins. These formations offer a palpable sense of the power of nature. Green tuff is formed from consolidated volcanic ash from underwater volcanic eruptions, giving it a distinctive green color.
Fukaura-machi has experienced repeated uplift over time, and the beautiful terraced coastal landscape is visible from the railway and roads running along the coast.
Senjyōjiki Coast is also easily accessible, just a short walk from Senjyōjiki Station on the Gonō Line.
This coast captivates many visitors as a breathtaking spot where one can experience majestic nature and history.
