Overview

Scattered throughout the beech primeval forest of the Shirakami-Sanchi are numerous lakes of varying sizes, believed to have been created by a massive landslide caused by a major earthquake approximately 300 years ago. Aoiike (Blue Pond), in particular, captivates many with its vibrant cobalt blue beauty. The crystal-clear water, visible to the bottom, reflects sunlight, creating a mystical blue glow. This breathtaking beauty changes depending on the weather, time of day, angle of the light, and viewing perspective, making it endlessly captivating. Besides Aoiike, there are other lakes each with its own unique charm, such as Keitouba no Ike (Chicken Head Pond), known for its high transparency and reflection of the surrounding scenery, and Wakitsubo no Ike (Boiling Pot Pond). Well-maintained walking paths wind through Juniko's forest, allowing visitors to explore the various lakes and fully immerse themselves in the rich natural beauty of the Shirakami-Sanchi. The lush green of the beech forest, the fresh air, and the beauty of the lakes will transport you far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Access to Juniko is approximately 15 minutes by Konan Bus "Juniko Line" from Juniko Station on the JR Gonosen Line. By car, it's about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Owani-Hirosaki IC on the Tohoku Expressway, and about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Ajigasawa IC on the Tsugaru Expressway. Prepare to be mesmerized by the majestic nature of the Shirakami-Sanchi and the mystical beauty of these lakes. Visit Juniko and experience its allure for yourself.
