Japan Canyon is a scenic spot located in Fukaura Town, Nishi-Tsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. Situated on the Sea of Japan side of the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range, it's part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. The canyon is a massive U-shaped valley carved by erosion, exposing the white tuff rock face. Its grandeur is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the United States, leaving visitors awestruck.
The name's origin dates back to 1953, when the Juunikko Lake was designated as a prefectural natural park. Explorer Mamoru Kishi, a member of the National Park Council visiting at the time, compared it to the Grand Canyon, famously exclaiming, "So, it's just a baby Grand Canyon!" This led to the name "Japan Canyon" being adopted by the then-Iwazaki Village office.
Japan Canyon is conveniently located as an access point to the Shirakami-Sanchi mountains and Juunikko Lake, with nearby visitor centers providing information on both areas. Well-maintained walking paths around Japan Canyon also allow for easy exploration.
Japan Canyon is a spectacular spot offering stunning natural beauty and scenery. Be sure to visit when exploring the Shirakami-Sanchi mountains.
