Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe opened in 1990. Built with a total investment of approximately 7.3 billion yen, it aimed to be Hokkaido's largest aquarium, initially attracting over 600,000 visitors annually. However, the bursting of the economic bubble and the decline in initial popularity led to financial difficulties. In 1997, the private company involved in its third-sector management effectively withdrew, leaving the city of Noboribetsu shouldering the burden. Facing a crisis, Kason Kanko took over management in 2001. Through measures such as staff reduction, improved food quality, and attracting foreign tourists, they achieved a single-year profit in 2006. Continuing its efforts, the park remains a beloved destination for many tourists.
Nixe Castle, a magnificent structure modeled after Egeskov Castle in Denmark, is the centerpiece. Inside, a massive tank showcases a diverse array of fish. The park also offers dolphin, sea lion, and penguin shows, as well as a touch pool where you can interact with stingrays and horseshoe crabs—fun for both children and adults.
The park features Nordic-style buildings, including souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes. The penguin parade, where penguins waddle along a designated path, is a particular favorite with children.
Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe offers not only the charm of an aquarium but also the unique experience of enjoying a Nordic atmosphere. It's a must-visit destination during your Hokkaido trip.
