Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is a group of explosion craters located on the western foot of the active volcano, Mt. Kutaraku, in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido. Volcanic activity began on the western foot of Mt. Kutaraku approximately 15,000 years ago, forming a lava dome on Hiwayama. Subsequently, repeated phreatic eruptions starting around 8,000 years ago formed Ōyunuma and Jigokudani. The most recent eruption is estimated to have occurred about 200 years ago along the Hiwayama-Ōyunuma-Ura Jigoku crater line. Jigokudani, true to its name, is a place of intense high-temperature steam and hydrothermal activity. The reddish-brown rock face, white plumes of steam erupting everywhere, and the smell of sulfur truly evoke the image of "hell." A well-maintained walking path allows visitors to explore and experience the power of nature. Jigokudani is the source of Noboribetsu Onsen's hot springs. While slightly outside the main onsen area, it's a popular tourist spot. Especially in the summer nights, it's illuminated as "Onibi no Michi" (Path of Ghost Fires), creating a fantastical atmosphere. Jigokudani is also registered as a Hokkaido Heritage site. Its breathtaking scenery will undoubtedly create an unforgettable memory.
