A powerful spot that preserves the history of Hokkaido's development. Its expansive grounds captivate visitors with beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons.
Hokkaido Shrine, established in 1872 (Meiji 5), has watched over Hokkaido's development and progress. Its founding reflects the hardships of Hokkaido's development and the hopes for the safety and prosperity of its people. It enshrines Emperor Meiji, along with Shima Yoshihiro (an official of the Hokkaido Development Commission), Matsumae Takahiro (Hakodate Magistrate who played an active role in the battle of Goryokaku), and Matsuura Takeshiro (explorer who devoted himself to the development of Ezochi). The vast grounds are filled with towering trees over 100 years old, offering breathtaking scenery throughout the year. In spring, the grounds are awash in pink with cherry blossoms. In autumn, the vibrant reds and yellows of the autumn leaves create a stunning spectacle. New Year's Day sees a large influx of worshippers, and at night, the lanterns illuminate the grounds with a magical glow. Hokkaido Shrine is a beloved power spot where history and nature harmoniously blend. Take your time strolling through the grounds, feeling the weight of history, and enjoy a moment of peace.
