A mystical pond at approximately 1400m above sea level on the Zao Central Plateau. Famous for its breathtaking spring greenery and autumn foliage, making it a popular tourist destination.
Dokko-numa is a mystical pond situated at approximately 1400m above sea level on the Zao Central Plateau. While a relatively small pond with a 350m circumference, its beauty, especially the vibrant fresh green foliage in late May and the stunning autumn leaves in early October, draws many visitors, making it a popular tourist spot. The name Dokko-numa originates from various legends, including one about a dokko (a Buddhist ritual implement) being thrown into the pond to subdue a dragon supposedly residing there. The pond is surrounded by a beech forest, and well-maintained walking paths make it easy to enjoy the natural surroundings. Just a short walk from Dokko-numa is the beautiful Fudo-taki waterfall. This 4m high and 16m wide waterfall is stunning in the green season, but even more breathtaking during autumn. The waterfall is said to be named after the statue of Fudo Myoo (Acala) placed at the base of the falls, which is fed by a stream originating from Dokko-numa. Dokko-numa is accessible via a approximately 20-minute walk from Zao Central Ropeway's Tori Kabuto Station, or a 25-minute walk from Onsen Station. Alternatively, you can use the forest road (toll road) by car. Several other attractions are located near Dokko-numa. For example, the Tori Kabutoyama Observatory offers panoramic views of the majestic Zao mountain range. Katabe-numa is another beautiful spot, characterized by its serene atmosphere within a deep beech forest and is known for its Zao thistle (Zaou Azami), an endemic species. Dokko-numa is a highly recommended spot to experience the natural beauty of Zao. Be sure to visit!
