Located along the Momijigawa River (a tributary of the Tategawa River) flowing through Yamagata City, Omaeyama Momijigawa Gorge is situated in Omaeyama Kogen, on the border between Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures. A 4.5km trekking course is maintained along the gorge. During the autumn foliage season, the trees along the gorge are painted in shades of red and yellow, creating a stunning contrast with the evergreen trees. Enjoy a walk through nature, taking in various waterfalls and a thrilling suspension bridge.
The JR Senzan Line runs parallel to the trekking course, with Omaeyama Kogen Station conveniently located near the course exit. There are onsen ryokans (traditional Japanese hot spring inns) and restaurants near the station, making it perfect for a day trip.
Along the trekking course, you'll find numerous highlights, including Senta Waterfall, Iwaya (rock hut), Hakun Kutta (white cloud cave), Matsuo-buchi (pond), Kinuito Waterfall, Nunobiki Waterfall, Seiryu-buchi (pond), Gendryu Waterfall, Kujiraiwa (whale rock), Senzan-buchi (pond), Takarabune (treasure boat), Hoju (jewel), and Fujibana Waterfall.
Fujibana Waterfall, in particular, is a representative tiered waterfall of Momijigawa Gorge. It's visible from the road and near the trailhead, but getting closer allows you to feel the refreshing mist and experience its powerful beauty.
Momijigawa Gorge offers not only breathtaking natural beauty but also opportunities to explore history and culture.
For example, Omaeyama Jinja Shrine, located near Omaeyama Kogen Station, is an ancient shrine that has long been a site of reverence and is also known as a power spot.
