A romantic observatory offering panoramic views of the majestic Nasu Kogen. At night, enjoy the breathtaking beauty of a starlit sky against the backdrop of city lights.
Nasu Kogen Observatory is a 1048-meter-high observatory located in Yumoto, Nasu-machi, Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture. Originally part of the Volcano Highway (a toll road), it served as an observation point and rest area with parking. Following the highway's free access opening, the observatory was renovated in June 2010 to fully utilize its stunning location and was certified as a "Lovers' Sanctuary." From the observatory, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Nasu mountain range, Nasu Kogen, and the Kantō Plain. On clear days, you can see distant mountains. The sunset is especially beautiful, with the sky painted in shades of orange and the silhouette of the mountains creating a captivating scene that draws many visitors. At night, the city lights twinkle brightly, offering a stunning contrast to the starlit sky. As a testament to its certification as a "Lovers' Sanctuary," a commemorative plaque bearing calligraphy by Yumi Katsura is displayed. Many couples propose here, making it a popular romantic date spot. The surrounding area offers plenty of onsen (hot spring) facilities and restaurants, making it ideal for a day trip. Be sure to visit Nasu Kogen Observatory during your visit to Nasu Kogen.
