Hirosaki City Museum is located right next to Hirosaki Castle. It systematically exhibits historical materials and art and craft artifacts cultivated under the Hirosaki Clan, including items from the former collection of the Tsugaru family. The museum also spotlights the traditions and culture nurtured in the Tsugaru region, presenting related materials, cultural heritage, and the achievements of prominent local figures.
The Hirosaki Clan established their domain in 1603 under the leadership of Tamemune Tsugaru. The Hirosaki domain flourished as one of the most economically and culturally powerful domains in the Tohoku region. At Hirosaki City Museum, you can learn about the history and culture of the Hirosaki Clan through precious materials and art and craft objects.
In particular, the former collection of the Hirosaki Tsugaru family is attracting national attention for its scale and quality. Among them, the "boar-shaped earthenware," designated as an Important Cultural Property, is a late Jomon period pottery unearthed from the Jūkoshinai ruins in Hirosaki City. Its adorable appearance has earned it the nickname "Inocchi."
Hirosaki City Museum is a place where you can not only learn about the history and culture of the Hirosaki Clan but also experience the traditions and culture of the Tsugaru region. Be sure to visit when you are in Hirosaki.
