Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, considered one of Japan's three great cherry blossom sites. In spring, approximately 2,600 cherry trees bloom in breathtaking splendor, and the "hanaikada" (carpet of fallen blossoms on the moat) is a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) is a vast park covering approximately 492,000 square meters (about 149,000 tsubo) located in the heart of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. The park grounds are the former site of Hirosaki Castle, the home of the Tsugaru clan, who ruled over a 100,000-koku domain during the Edo period. Hirosaki Castle was originally built in 1603 (Keicho 8) by Tsugaru Tameyasu. After undergoing several renovations, it took on its current form. The castle keep was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1627 (Kan'ei 4), but was not rebuilt. The current keep is a reconstruction of the Tatsumi Yagu (tower) from 1810 (Bunka 7). Hirosaki Castle boasts many remaining structures from the feudal period, including the keep and various towers, making it a fascinating destination for history buffs. Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) is known as one of Japan's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, hosting the "Hirosaki Sakura Matsuri" (Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival) in spring, where approximately 2,600 cherry trees burst into bloom. The "hanaikada," a breathtaking carpet of cherry blossoms floating on the castle moat, captivates visitors with its ethereal beauty. Within the castle grounds, you'll also find the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden, showcasing a diverse collection of cherry blossoms. During the cherry blossom festival, nighttime illuminations transform the park into a magical wonderland, offering a completely different perspective from the daytime view. Beyond its cherry blossoms, Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) offers stunning seasonal scenery throughout the year. From the vibrant spring blossoms to the lush greenery of summer, the fiery autumn foliage, and the serene winter snowscape, it's a place worth visiting at any time of year.
