Overview
The Kega Kuyoto Weeping Cherry Tree is a designated natural monument of Iida City, located in Kega, Iida, Nagano Prefecture. Estimated to be over 300 years old, this cherry tree displays a classic weeping cherry form, its branches gracefully cascading down a slope. Its elegant beauty has undoubtedly captivated travelers and delighted onlookers for centuries.
Beneath the cherry tree stand stone monuments, including one dedicated to Akiha, and a nightly lamp. Locals keep the lamps continuously lit, creating a magical ambiance, particularly stunning at night when the blossoms are illuminated.
It's said that the tree was planted during the time when the Iida castle lord was of the Wakisaka clan (1617-1672). A local legend suggests that residents of the nearby Ishibata area planted it to commemorate those who perished in battles, as well as travelers and horses who fell along the old road.
The Kega Kuyoto Weeping Cherry Tree is a beautiful blend of history and nature, heralds the arrival of spring, and offers a precious moment of solace to all who visit. Its location along the Enshu-kaido (road) adds to its charm. Visit during cherry blossom season, of course, but consider exploring its beauty in other seasons too; you're sure to create unforgettable memories.
