The majestic Sasunoi Falls, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, captivates visitors with its breathtaking three-tiered cascade, featuring a stunning 69m-high first tier.

Overview

Located in Yamakita-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Sasunoi Falls is a magnificent waterfall selected as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan." Its awe-inspiring three-tiered cascade—a 69-meter-high first tier, a 16-meter second tier, and a 29-meter third tier—leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it. This waterfall is also renowned as the site where Bungen, a prominent Buddhist monk during the Kamakura period, endured 100 days of rigorous ascetic training under the cascading water. Bungen, commissioned by Minamoto no Yoritomo, played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the Kamakura Shogunate. His austere training at this location adds a significant historical dimension to Sasunoi Falls. Furthermore, Sasunoi Falls is also recognized as one of Japan's "Top 100 Famous Waters," celebrated for its pristine water quality. The sight of the clear water cascading down is incredibly refreshing and calming. A well-maintained walking path runs along the Takizawa River, offering a pleasant stroll where you can fully appreciate the grandeur of Sasunoi Falls and the surrounding lush natural beauty. Moreover, the "Sasunoi Falls Festival" takes place annually on the fourth Sunday of July. This festival features traditional events like water purification rituals, fire festivals, and performances of the Sasunoi Taiko drums, serving as an important cultural tradition for the local community. Sasunoi Falls is a captivating tourist spot blending magnificent nature, history, and traditional culture. We encourage you to visit and experience its unique charm firsthand.
