Ashiribetsu Falls is the largest waterfall in Sapporo, located within the Takino Suzuran Hillside Park in Sapporo's Minami-ku ward. Its 26-meter drop is truly awe-inspiring.
Ashiribetsu Falls was formed by a massive volcanic eruption tens of thousands of years ago that created the Shikotsu caldera. The Atsubetsu River, its flow initially blocked by the eruption, resumed its erosive work over many years, eventually carving out the waterfall's current form.
The waterfall's name derives from the Ainu word "Ashiribetsu," meaning "new river." This word is also the etymological root of the Atsubetsu place name.
Ashiribetsu Falls showcases stunning beauty throughout the year. Spring brings vibrant greenery, summer offers cool shade and refreshing negative ions, autumn paints the surrounding mountains in fiery reds and yellows, enhancing the waterfall's already captivating beauty. And in winter, the spray freezes into a breathtaking ice waterfall.
Ashiribetsu Falls is a captivating tourist spot where you can experience the raw power and beauty of nature. If you're visiting Sapporo, be sure to check it out!
