A stunning kofun group where cherry blossoms and canola flowers create a breathtaking landscape.
The Kotaku Kofungun is a large group of kofun located in Mashiko-machi, Haga District, Tochigi Prefecture. Comprising a total of 35 kofun—6 zenpo-koen-fun (keyhole-shaped mounds) and 29 circular mounds (11 of which have been leveled)—they are situated on a gently sloping hill and flatland on the right bank of the Kotaku River, a tributary of the Ko-kai River. The kofun extend from Kameoka Hachiman Shrine southwest to the Aota district, offering views of the Kotaku River's rice paddies below, the imposing Haga Fuji (Taiheizan) mountain in the distance, and the Yachimata mountain range beyond. In spring, the Kotaku Kofungun explodes with color, as cherry blossoms and canola flowers create a breathtakingly beautiful scene. The contrast of pink and yellow is simply stunning, sure to soothe and delight visitors. From the kofun, you can also enjoy majestic views of the Kotaku River's rice paddies and Haga Fuji (Taiheizan). The Kotaku Kofungun also offers a glimpse into history. Built over 1500 years ago, these ancient burial mounds provide a window into the lives and culture of the people of that era. Nearby, Kameoka Hachiman Shrine adds another layer of historical significance. The Kotaku Kofungun is also a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.
