Akashikyō Gorge is a valley located in Oguni-machi, southwestern Yamagata Prefecture, and is part of the Bandai-Asahi National Park.
The area is abundant with Japanese maple trees, and during the autumn foliage season, the crimson leaves covering the mountainside create a stunning landscape, resembling a raging inferno—a truly fitting image for the gorge sometimes called "Japan's Red Cliff".
The name Akashikyō (Red Shiba Gorge) is said to be derived from this fiery autumn foliage.
Even during the fresh green season, the lush valley is beautiful, showcasing its unique charm throughout the year.
The Arakawa River, a rapid stream that cuts through the Asahi Mountains, exposes shale and granite formations along its course.
A well-maintained walking path makes exploring Akashikyō Gorge easy and enjoyable. The trail provides close-up views of the magnificent valley scenery.
Its tranquil and serene atmosphere makes it ideal for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature.
Akashikyō Gorge remains relatively undeveloped, offering a peaceful escape from crowds. It's the perfect place for a relaxing time surrounded by the sounds of nature.
Access is via a short detour from National Route 113. Ample parking is available, making it convenient to visit by car.
When visiting Akashikyō Gorge, allow yourself plenty of time to fully appreciate the scenery.
