Kitaya Residence is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, showcasing the quintessential *machiya* (traditional townhouse) architecture of Kaga. Originally belonging to the Takasaki family, descendants of Echizen samurai, it thrived as an oil shop and later a sake brewery from the mid-Edo period until around 1975. Its street-facing exterior embodies the classic Kaga *machiya* style, featuring slender vertical lattices and a second-floor gable wall supported by brackets. This well-preserved structure is one of the oldest remaining *machiya* in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The sake "Shoujou," once brewed at Kitaya Residence, has been revived after nearly half a century. This sake uses locally sourced rice and water, produced using traditional methods. Be sure to savor "Shoujou" during your visit.
Kitaya Residence offers a precious opportunity to experience the traditional culture and history of Kaga. Explore the charming streetscape while immersing yourself in the historical and cultural ambiance.
