Overview
Shibukawa River Cherry Blossoms is a hidden gem cherry blossom viewing spot within walking distance of Musashi-Kosugi Station. The breathtaking sight of cherry blossoms blooming on both sides of the river, with a walkway at the river's bottom, is truly stunning. Perhaps due to the windbreak effect of the trees, a calm and peaceful atmosphere prevails. With plenty of benches, you can relax and fully enjoy the hanami (cherry blossom viewing). While not as expansive as the nearby Sumiyoshi Sakura, its quiet and serene atmosphere makes it a beloved, hidden gem for many.
During the Edo period, Shibukawa River was a branch of the Nikeiryō Waterway, diverting water from the Tama River to irrigate the fields of Sumiyoshi Village, branching off near Daijōin Temple in present-day Imai-minamimachi. After the war, three local residents, including the Yoshida priest of Sumiyoshi Shrine, planted the first cherry saplings. Today, a well-maintained walking path runs along the river, allowing visitors to enjoy both the river and the blossoms.
This spot is perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
