Overview

Sōon-an Temple (Ikkyū-ji Temple), located in Kyōtanabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a temple renowned for being where Ikkyū Sōjun, a Zen monk of the Muromachi period, spent his later years. Ikkyū Sōjun was a Zen monk born during the time of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, known for his eccentricities and witty stories. Ikkyū-ji Temple offers many places where you can feel the Zen teachings of Ikkyū Sōjun and see structures connected to him. For example, the "Hōjō" (abbot's quarters), where Ikkyū Sōjun is said to have spent his last 17 years, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Hōjō garden incorporates karesansui (dry landscape) and shakkei (borrowed scenery), and is said to represent Ikkyū Sōjun's Zen teachings.
