Experience the majestic beauty of a garden harmonizing nature and history, known as the hideaway of the Ashikaga Shogun!
Kosei-ji Temple served as a refuge for Ashikaga Yoshiharu, the Ashikaga Shogun during the Muromachi period, escaping the turmoil of Kyoto. The current "Old Shurin-ji Garden", constructed during his stay, boasts a breathtaking landscape featuring the clear waters of the Adumi River and the imposing Seriya-ga-mine mountain in the background, transporting visitors to another time and place. Nestled on a terrace formed by the Adumi River, the garden features the "Tsuzumi-no-taki" (Drum Waterfall) cascading down a man-made hill into a pond. The pond, created using a meandering stream style, includes stone-made islands shaped like tortoises and cranes, connected by a stunning natural stone bridge near the center. The bold stonework throughout the garden reflects the power of the samurai class during the Sengoku period, while beautifully harmonizing with nature. An ancient camellia tree, standing tall for over 600 years, silently witnesses the passage of time. Kosei-ji Temple is not only a historical site associated with Ashikaga Yoshiharu but also a place to experience the beauty of nature. The unique atmosphere, a blend of magnificent nature and history, will leave an unforgettable impression on visitors.
