Saikyoji Temple is a temple founded in the Heian period as a branch temple of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. Later, during the Sengoku period, it became the family temple of Mitsuhide Akechi. Before serving Nobunaga, Akechi was the lord of the Sakamoto region where Saikyoji Temple is located. Akechi deeply revered the temple and, in his later years, wished to establish his family temple there. Indeed, Akechi's tomb and those of his family were erected at Saikyoji. Besides Akechi's tomb, the temple also houses the tomb of his wife, Hiroko. Furthermore, Saikyoji features a tea room said to have been used by Akechi in his later years, and the Akechi Museum, exhibiting Akechi's letters and personal belongings. Saikyoji is a temple rich in history and nature. It offers stunning views of Lake Biwa, a picturesque garden, and historical sites related to Akechi. Be sure to visit Saikyoji and experience its rich history and natural beauty.
