Ryōtan-ji Temple is the family temple of the Ii clan, located near Hikone Castle. It was established as a branch temple from Ryōtan-ji in Tōtōmi Province when Ii Naomasa was transferred to Sawayama Castle.
Ryōtan-ji is known for its beautiful and serene gardens. The "Fudaraku no Niwa" (Fudaraku Garden), a kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden, features 48 stones arranged in white sand, with the majestic Sawayama Castle as a backdrop.
The "Hōrai Chikentei" (Hōrai Pond and Spring Garden), a chisen-shūkaien (pond and spring garden), harmoniously blends a pond and artificial hills, offering captivating scenery throughout the year.
