Onnenai Boardwalk

Overview

The Onnenai Boardwalk is a roughly 3km-long walkway located on the western side of Kushiro Shitsugen. Designated as a special area within the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, this marsh boasts a precious ecosystem and is critically important for nature conservation. Walking the Onnenai Boardwalk allows you to experience the richness of the marsh's nature with all five senses. The boardwalk is well-maintained for easy observation of the marsh's plants and birds, making for a leisurely stroll. In mid-to-late June, you might witness the magical sight of fireflies (heike-botaru) dancing in the air. If you're lucky, you might even spot the tancho crane, a symbol of the marsh. The tancho crane represents the marsh's thriving ecosystem and captivates many with its elegant presence. The marsh is also home to various plant species, each showcasing a unique beauty throughout the seasons. Spring brings delicate flowers like mizubashou (Skunk Cabbage) and ryukin-ka (Globeflower), summer offers lush greenery, autumn paints the marsh with vibrant fall colors, and winter showcases the dignified tancho crane against a snowy backdrop.
