A walking path where you can enjoy views of Otaru's cityscape and feel a sense of history.
The Former Temiya Line was part of Hokkaido's first railway, the government-run Horonai Railway, opened in 1880. It transported coal from the Horonai coal mine (in present-day Mikasa City) to the port city of Otaru. After its closure in 1985, the city of Otaru redeveloped the railway site into a roughly 1.6km walking path. Walking the path, you can see remaining brick bridge abutments and track remnants. You can also enjoy views of Otaru's cityscape while reflecting on the area's history. The Former Temiya Line is an important historical site in Otaru, cherished by both tourists and locals. Visit the Former Temiya Line and experience a piece of Otaru's history.
