Overview

Otaru Canal, located in Otaru City, Hokkaido, was completed in 1923. Uniquely in Japan, it was constructed by reclaiming land from the offshore area. It stretches 1,140 meters and features a gentle curve. Originally used for cargo handling at Otaru Port, a section was filled in 1986 to create a promenade, transforming it into a major tourist attraction for Otaru City and its surrounding areas. The Otaru Canal played a crucial role in Otaru's development during the Meiji and Taisho periods. At that time, goods such as coal and timber were transported from the port to the city via the canal. Warehouses and factories lined the canal, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere.
