Overview

Kushizaki Castle, built on a hilltop on a peninsula jutting out into the Suo Nada Sea, served as a strategically important location overlooking the Kanmon Strait. Originally constructed during the Sengoku period by Naito Takaharu, a high-ranking retainer of the Ouchi clan, it was later renovated by Mouri Hidemoto as the castle of his Chofu domain after the Battle of Sekigahara reduced the Mori clan's territory to the two provinces of Suo and Nagato. Following the Ikkoku-Ichijo-rei edict, it was demolished, and a residence was built nearby. For approximately 250 years, however, it served as an important administrative center and the residence of the Chofu domain lord. Today, Kushizaki Castle ruins, preserved as Kanmidai Park, allow visitors to see the remaining stone walls and the reconstructed foundation of the castle keep. The surrounding area retains the atmosphere of the old Chofu castle town, offering a captivating historical walking experience. Numerous sites are worth visiting, including the national treasure Kosan-ji Temple, the Chofu Garden, and the Chofu Mori Residence. Offering majestic views of the Kanmon Strait and a palpable sense of history, Kushizaki Castle ruins are a must-see destination when visiting Shimonoseki.
