Overview

Furugo Cho is a historic street in the Chofu district of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, retaining the atmosphere of the Edo period. Once lined with the residences of samurai serving the Chofu clan, it vividly preserves the ambiance of that era. The beautiful earthen walls (dobetsu) and whitewashed walls (hakuheki) are particularly striking, offering a glimpse into the lifestyles and culture of the time simply by walking along it. Furugo Cho is a popular spot not only for history buffs but also for photography enthusiasts. The Chofu clan was established by the Mori clan, and Furugo Cho was located very close to the clan's administrative center. Therefore, the street was home to the residences of the feudal lord, vassals, and merchants, all reflecting the prosperity of the time. Walking through Furugo Cho feels like stepping back in time. You can leisurely stroll while imagining the lifestyles and culture of the Edo period. Several historical sites are also preserved here. For example, the Sugake Nagaya-mon gate, the entrance to the residence of the Suga family, who served as physicians to the Chofu clan, offers a glimpse into the lives of wealthy farmers of that time. While Furugo Cho is a must-see for history lovers, even those without a strong interest in history will appreciate its beautiful scenery. If you visit Shimonoseki, be sure to visit Furugo Cho; it's sure to create an unforgettable memory.
