The legendary castle ruins said to have been built in a single night by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Sengoku period.
Overview
Sumata One-Night Castle was built during the Sengoku period by Kinoshita Toichiro (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi), a vassal of Oda Nobunaga, as a base for conquering Mino Province. The legend of its construction in a single night is famous, but it was likely completed in a few days. Nevertheless, considering the circumstances, the incredibly short construction time is undeniable, showcasing Hideyoshi's remarkable strategic skills and castle-building prowess.
While Sumata Castle was abandoned just three months after its completion, it remains a significant historical site, highlighting Hideyoshi's exceptional castle-building skills and strategic thinking.
Instead of a replica of the original fort-like structure, the site now houses the Sumata One-Night Castle (History Museum), which includes a castle keep. The museum offers insights into the construction of Sumata Castle and the life of Hideyoshi. It is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot, offering stunning views of blooming sakura in spring.
When visiting Sumata One-Night Castle, consider reflecting on Hideyoshi's ingenuity and strategic brilliance, as well as the history of the Sengoku period. During cherry blossom season, enjoy a relaxing time amidst the beautiful scenery. It will surely be an unforgettable experience.
