Goryokaku Fort

Overview

Goryokaku is a star-shaped fort built at the end of the Edo period by the Hakodate Magistrate's Office. Completed in 1866, it was a state-of-the-art fort at the time, incorporating Western construction techniques. The designer was a French engineer, Tantou Verney. Goryokaku became the stage for the Battle of Hakodate, and its history concluded in 1869 when the old shogunate army surrendered to the new government army. Today, Goryokaku is designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan and has been developed into a lush green park. Within the park stands the Goryokaku Tower, which conveys the history and culture of Goryokaku. From its observation deck, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire fort. The view of Goryokaku from the Goryokaku Tower is truly spectacular, offering a sweeping vista of Hakodate's cityscape, Mount Hakodate, and the Tsugaru Strait.
