The Former Soma Family Residence was built as the home of the Soma family, entrepreneurs who flourished in Hakodate during the Meiji era. The Soma family prospered through trade and finance following the opening of the Hakodate port. Their residence is a valuable building that tells the story of the lives of wealthy merchants in Hakodate at that time.
The interior preserves the original furnishings and furniture, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of wealthy merchants. The lavish reception room and study are particularly noteworthy, showcasing the technology and aesthetics of the era.
