A shrine located on the site of Matsue Castle, dedicated to Matsudaira Naomasa, the founder of the Matsue Domain. Visiting it alongside Matsue Castle is highly recommended.
Matsue Shrine, situated on the grounds of Matsue Castle, is dedicated to Matsudaira Naomasa, the founder of the Matsue Domain. Established in 1877 by local citizens of the former Matsue Domain as Rakusan Shrine, it incorporated the divine spirit of Toshogu Shrine (founded by Horio Yoshiharu in 1898) the following year. It then moved to its current location in 1899 and was renamed Matsue Shrine. It also enshrines Matsudaira Harunaga, a pivotal figure in the revival of the Matsue Domain, and Horio Yoshiharu, the founder of Matsue. As such, it's an indispensable site for understanding Matsue's history. The view from Matsue Castle's keep tower is magnificent, offering a blend of history and nature. The shrine grounds also feature numerous historic structures, including the main hall built in 1628 and the worship hall built in 1661. When visiting Matsue Castle, be sure to also visit Matsue Shrine.
