The Matsue Matsudaira clan built Matsue Castle in the early Edo period and ruled Matsue for over 200 years. Gessho-ji Temple is said to have been established in 1602 by the clan's first lord, Matsudaira Naomase. Successive Matsudaira lords were subsequently buried at the temple.
