Igusa Hachiman-gu Shrine, located in Zenpukuji, Suginami-ku, Tokyo, is renowned for its connection to Minamoto no Yoritomo. Established in the late Heian period, it initially enshrined Kasuga-sha, but legend says that Yoritomo prayed for victory in the Oshu Conquest, leading to Hachiman-O-kami becoming the main deity.
Igusa Hachiman-gu Shrine possesses one of the largest sacred groves in Tokyo, offering a tranquil space surrounded by lush greenery. Within the grounds, you can see a section of the roots of the old pine tree, "Natural Monument - Igusa Hachiman no Matsu," reportedly planted and dedicated by Yoritomo himself. This once towering pine tree, reaching approximately 40 meters in height, withered in 1973, but its roots are preserved and on display for visitors to see.
Recently, the shrine has attracted many fans of the anime series *Monogatari*, as it served as the model for Kitashirohebi Shrine in the show. It's become a popular pilgrimage site for *Monogatari* fans.
Igusa Hachiman-gu Shrine is a place to relax and unwind in a peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by nature and steeped in history, it's ideal for those seeking respite from the city's hustle and bustle.
