Tsurigazaki Coast, known as a mecca for surfing, attracts many surfers year-round with its consistently excellent waves.
Tsurigazaki Coast is located at the southern end of Kujukuri Beach in Ichinomiya-machi, Chiba Prefecture. Known as a surfing mecca, it draws many surfers year-round thanks to its consistently high-quality waves. The coast offers waves suitable for surfers of all levels, from beginners to experts. It's even called the "surfing dojo" because it has produced many world-class professional surfers. Every year, high-level surfing competitions are held here, showcasing incredible rides from top athletes around the globe. Furthermore, Tsurigazaki Coast is the site of the Kamitsuge Jusha Matsuri festival, making it a sacred location. This festival, the oldest beach-landing ceremony in Boso, boasts a history and tradition spanning over 1200 years, dating back to 807 AD (Daido 2). It's also registered as an intangible folk cultural property of Chiba Prefecture. On September 10th each year, a Shinto ritual takes place where Uga-ya-fuki-ai-no-mikoto travels from Ugawa Shrine by mikoshi (portable shrine) to visit Tamayori-hime-no-mikoto at Tamamae Shrine for their yearly rendezvous. A subsequent ritual involves releasing the gods born from their union into a well at Ugawa Shrine. Then, on the 13th, the main festival is solemnly observed in an ancient style, reenacting the majestic story of the gods gathering at Tsurigazaki Coast on Kujukuri Beach, as the legend tells. Mikoshi are carried from various shrines dedicated to the gods of Tamayori-hime-no-mikoto's clan, and over 2500 young men, bare-chested, dash along the shore with the ocean at their backs, creating a breathtaking spectacle as they converge on Tsurigazaki Coast. Tsurigazaki Coast is not only a place to enjoy surfing but also a place to experience history and culture. We highly recommend a visit.
