Overview
Nasu Alpaca Ranch opened in 1999, becoming the first facility in Japan to introduce alpacas. Initially, 200 alpacas were airlifted from Chile. Early challenges included adapting to the new environment and overcoming limitations in veterinary care and information. Through persistent effort, the ranch established successful breeding and husbandry techniques, expanding its herd to approximately 400 alpacas.
In 2008, an alpaca named Hanako gained national recognition as "Alpaka no Kulare-chan" (the Kulare alpaca) in a series of commercials for Kuraray Co., Ltd., significantly increasing awareness of alpacas in Japan. Other alpacas, including Taraki, Mick, Ham, Ko-tsubu, Milky, Kaikai, Moomin, Jump, and Ricky, have also starred as "Alpaka no Kulare-chan".
Nasu Alpaca Ranch also offered alpaca rentals and sales, sharing the joy of these animals with many people. In February 2023, the ranch announced its closure, citing factors such as decreased visitor numbers following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Approximately half of the 177 alpacas were sold to Nasu Kogen Rindo Lake Family Ranch, while the remaining animals were entrusted to other care facilities, marking a new chapter for the alpacas.
Nasu Alpaca Ranch, a place filled with countless cherished memories, will continue to be fondly remembered.
