A temple at the heart of the charming Imaicho town, steeped in history and culture.
Shonenji Temple, located in Imaicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha temple that served as the core of Imaicho during the late Muromachi period. From the late medieval period onward, it hosted prominent Buddhist priests such as Shoko Shonin, Jitsujun (the youngest son of Rennyo Shonin), and Kennyo Shonin of Hongan-ji, playing a significant role in history. It is said that Emperor Meiji stayed at the temple in 1877 and was informed of the outbreak of the Seinan War here. Shonenji Temple is thus a precious remaining structure of a Jodo Shinshu temple and has played a crucial role in history. The main hall, an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is currently undergoing preservation and repair, aiming for completion in Spring 2022 (Reiwa 4). Shonenji Temple is a captivating temple where you can feel the history and culture, beloved by many tourists. Imaicho, once a flourishing post town in the Edo period, still retains its traditional townscape. When visiting Shonenji Temple, be sure to enjoy a stroll through Imaicho as well.
