Gakuon-ji Temple

Overview

Gakuon-ji Temple is a Shingon sect temple of the Toyo-zan branch located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Tradition holds that it was founded during the Koin period (810-824 AD) by Saicho. In the early Heian period, it flourished as a central training center for Shingon Buddhism, attracting numerous monks. However, it later declined, and the present buildings are from the Muromachi period reconstruction. Gakuon-ji Temple houses numerous valuable Buddhist statues, including the National Treasure Yakushi Nyorai seated statue and Important Cultural Properties such as the wooden statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. The Yakushi Nyorai statue, believed to be from the early Heian period, is striking for its graceful and serene expression. The Four Heavenly Kings statues, from the Kamakura period, command attention with their powerful presence.
